censored- display ideas

display ideas.

I decided to explore the idea of presenting my work through multiple old, televisions as i remember visiting the Tate Museum once and being enamoured with the display there which included multiple tv's placed on the floor. These image scan be seen below.I think what drew mw to this installation initially was the interactive element of it, how the viewer is able to sit down and watch the piece. It allows the viewer to take time, sit down and completely absorb the imagery. I think the using a tv as the medium to view the imagery creates an interesting equilibrium between the theme  being portrayed and the display itself. The display reminded me of art imitating life, then  life imitating art, as the messages being shown to the viewer are about media and the influence of the media, which is showcased through a tv commonly associated with media and it's been   our way to reaching the news/ media for many years, So bringing the viewer down to sit down and watch these tv's is almost like when we sit down in our own house and watch tv.

how it relates to my theme/ deeper meaning.

I think there is a direct visually link between my display ideas and my theme. Thus far i have focused on representation of girlhood and female sexuality within the media/ film. A T.V is a visual representation of how we perceive the media, we are conditioned to associate a t.v with communication, publishing and the film industry due to it being played on our screens for so long. I think it definitely correlated to my project as it focuses on the censorship of girlhood and the female body in mainstream media.

i think the use of the old format of the technology allows the viewer to have a juxtaposed allegory. i think it also fuses the past and the present for the viewer as they are able to identify the representation of girlhood presented to them. the tv's also allowed me to explore/ showcase my work in a non - conventional way, i think as my project evolved naturally the ways of displaying my work gradually expanded from its original form. if my final outcome reflected my original concept, it would have been a conventional, narrative based film. recollecting back to my starting point for this project, i would say the inclusion of archived footage and experimental visuals and audio helped to sustain my project. as i was unable to find a suitable cast for the film, i believe this demonstrated my problem solving capabilities.

moreover, the inclusion of various clips within my final outcome helps to add consistency and relevance to my displays, as it demands to be played simultaneously at once. this creates a unique experience for the viewer as they are viewing the visuals all at once, creating a joint conjunction of visuals and audio. during the selection of clips, i had to be critical of my selection as i was only able to use audio from one of the tv's. this allowed me to think about how the audio and visuals would sync together and be harmonious, instead of it being disoriented.

i researched into tv art installations on pintrest and these were some of the image that remained with me. this maybe due to the installation's use of different imagery to create  one whole one. for instance the one with the religious symbolism, we can see the whole portrait of jesus on the cross perhaps, which is countered with visuals after his resurrection .  i think the use of the different colour palates also influence my decision to use multiple tv's. the black and white imagery contrasts perfectly with the soft neutral, close up of this face. it's almost as the viewer i s placed to look at the bigger picture while admiring the smaller details concurrently.

using multiple tv's allows me to experiment with the composition of the whole piece as well as the space of the installation. these images also gave me an insight into how to align my tv's as there are different versions to place them.
