censored. whats the meaning behind my project?
I decided to name my project censored as i believe it best suits the theme i'm exploring for my FMP. For Unit 7 I would like to explore girlhood and female sexuality within the media and in society. censored refers to the censorship of girlhood and the accurate representations of it within the media. strong imagery of girlhood are often misrepresented within the media and this is something i want to highlight within my project by creating a short film which reflects a story of girlhood. Which will be personal and will be a first hand representation of girlhood and growing up. female sexuality is often censored in the media as well, this is due to the female body being constantly objectified and sexualised within the same media. my project will be stating how the media portrays and exaggerates the sexualised, female body. This imagery is shown to us through the male gaze additionally. Due to this the female body and sexuality is seen as something as a taboo and to be afraid of.
I will be closely looking into films that reflect a positive representation of girlhood, these will include; Lady Bird, The Virgin Suicides, the Fits, Palo Alto and Mustang. Within these films i will be looking into the portrayal of the female characters and how the story serves their girlhood and coming of age. I came across the book by Graeme Turner called Film as a social practice. In which they explain how films and imagery seen on our screens have a direct cultural impact on the audiences perceptions of the world. I agree with this statement completely, as i have found that the misrepresentation of women in film leads to a miscommunicated treatment of the female body in society. To further expand, we often we the female body through the male gaze, it's seen as a desired object for the target audiences, which are commonly male. This creates a toxic image of female sexuality within the viewer, as it's routinely seen for the pleasure of the male. Contradictorily, when ever we see the female body in context of female empowerment or sexual freedom for the women, these imagery are often cut or censored when presented to the audience. This can be through the censor board, social media guidelines, the film certificate board etc..
I plan to produce a narrative based moving image in the form of visual poetry, meaning that the film will be visually communicative, i plan to implement various forms of visuals in the final outcome. For instance the film will have an installation based element to it. I plan to create an experimental piece for this, containing a lack of or limited dialogues. To clearly assist my visions, I have examined the work of Jean-Luc Godard, Sophia Coppola and Great Gerwig. Their use of nonverbal techniques to convey the narrative and experimentation of their stories have influence me immensely for this project.
