TAL ROSNER.
I have chosen Tal Rosner as a reference due to the implementation of music in his work. His videography combines of multiple layers of sound and visuals which is used to create a new language of classical/contemporary video installations and live performances. For this spec I focused to examine his implementation of sound in 2 of his visual illustrations. One of them being a visual interpretation of Stravinskys 2-piano concerto – For this video Rosner has used layers of footage to create graphic elements on to the screen, the tonal and rhythmic variation in the music are represented through the movement, contrast, tone and composition of the imagery. The film almost becomes a physical representation of the sounds by turning it into a rhythmic sketchbook in motion constantly alternating between the graphic/abstract and the normal. The use of dissonant audio is an element I will be using in my work to create a discourse with the use of both audio and visuals.
The second film I examined was WITHOUT YOU – which was inspire by a poem by Josef Albers and is a visual interpretation of industrial British suburbia, located in London. A predominant feature used in this film in the split screen division, which is common in Rosner's previous works as well. The split screen division is applied throughout the entirely of the film which reflects both the harmony and contrast within the dialogue of the film created by the harmonic interference of the audio juxtaposed by the imagery of natural and manmade environments. The film takes the viewer on a surreal journey containing thought evoking image juxtapositions and repetitive cut and paste collages. The highly graphic and stark feature allows it to follow a colour coded path which takes the viewer through a narrative shown in forms of simple patterns that submerge into one another. Rosner in this case has used both surreal audio and visuals to solve theme of industrial suburbia with the inclusion of abstract patterns that at first glance may seem simplistic but holds immense complexity. This use of abstract patterns and shapes helped me to shape out my digital illustrations as I was able to create illustrations that fully visualised my background imagery.
