self reflection - HOW MY PROJECT EVOLVED.

HOW MY PROJECT EVOLVED/CHANGED?

My original proposal included the exploration of girlhood through an experimental short film. This was my original concept for my FMP however due to creative circumstances i have decided to change and interpret this idea a new way. My proposal was called censored form the beginning but my research included looking into films and books that concentrated specifically on girlhood and growing up, which was shown through the female experience. I looked into films makers such as Andrea Arnold, Sophia Coppola, Greta Gerwig to add context of girlhood in my project. I looked into their films such as Fish Tank, America Honey, Virgin Suicides and Lady Bird. I think their films gave me a direction in which to take my project i wanted to strive for the aesthetic and tones of their films. After watching and analysing their films i felt they all gave a personal, accurate an diversified experience of girlhood. I think as a young woman myself these films impacted me immensely therefore i wanted to create something similar to this. I had a personal attachment to the themes portrayed and the themes i wanted to portray.

As well as looking into these directors i closely examined Jean Luc Godard and the french new wave. These films offered me visuals that allowed me to express my thoughts and opinions during aleatory, with combining it with audio and my own visuals i illustrated using after effects, premier pro and photoshop.  With this in mind I used Godard and the new wave as one of my reference, in terms of how to display and show case and display my work to the viewer. It was important for me to do this in a more experimental way so that i was able to engage more with the project as well as keeping it refreshing and new during the creative process. I wanted to use some of his imagery/ visuals in my final outcome so that i could engage the viewer more as well as making my display more visually communicative.

After conducting my secondary research such as looking into films, books, articles, photographer, directors and engaging with artists in museums i came to writing my
script for the film. I intended for the film to be experimental, slow paced with minimal dialogue. I wanted it to reflect the poetic mode of film making. The story followed a young woman named Francias, she is a dancer and the script followed her life from the dance studio to her house. I did workshop inside and outside of college to help me write the script. I part took in an online script workshop to help me figure out the intentions of my character and it allowed me to write a character who had different layers.  This workshop was self initiated as it was important for me to gain as much as experience in screenplay as possible. I think bringing my own experiences of growing up and emotions helped me to connect to the character more and made me engage in the script and the story. I took part in a work shop at college, the creative writing workshop gave me na insight into professional scrips. This mad em look into the screen play of the films i was anlaysing, this impacted my writing immensely as i was able to see how these creators visually transformed their word from paper on to the screen. I analysed the screen play for lady bird written by Greta Gerwig as this was the film i watched the most and was intrigued into how she wrote her characters and the settings etc...

I would say the main cause for the change in my project was the delay in my production, i would say after looking back at my work my pre- production was successful in terms of getting a script ready and establishing the themes as well as scouting out possible locations. I also kept a record of my conversations with people about my cast and the procedures I took out. However, due to technical difficulties I was unable to shoot with the cast in the time i planned out. I believe this may have happened for a reason, because it allowed for my final outcome  to become more experimental and i realised i was more keen with my project after it took a turn.

I'm aware there is a change compared to the original concept however, the idea of exploring girlhood/women hood is still intact as the representation of girlhood in the media still reflect similar issues as my original concept. And i'm only seeing this change as an addition to my original concept so that my final outcome will become more flexible for the viewers to understand. I believe they al fall under the same umbrella and adding and taking away a few element helped me massively to establish my style and eventually the final outcome.

I will still be producing a final outcome that reflect girlhood, but using archived footage that is mainly influenced by Jean Luc Godard. The outcome will included a dialogue based narrative. I be reading out writings based on girlhood written by me. I hope for the visuals and my audio to interact and co - exist well within the outcome process. The writings will still reflect girlhood and focus on the experiences of growing. However, just with the inclusion of an installation based element.  I also researched into how aspects of girlhood are also censored on social media and the main stream media such as periods and inherent femininity. I believe due to the inclusion of these subjects my project still follows the guide lines of my original concept of girlhood but theres an added element of the media and censorship. This is something i see as an advantage as this allowed me to see a new vision for my final outcome.
