Representing Reality Evaluation.
Evaluation.
I believe I have successfully solved the brief by portraying the theme of Representing Reality through a collection of archived footage and implementation of voice overs which captures the life experiences of the youth today. Within this project I have used my creative initiative to solve the theme through my own stylistic choices and expanding my techniques by not constraining myself within the comfort zone. It didn’t worry me that the final outcome didn't adhere to the conventional sense of documentary filmmaking as I was happy with the evolution of my work and my personal progression as an artist. I believe for the continuation for the project it was inevitable for my work to become more of an abstraction due to the collection of voiceovers I collected over the course of time reflecting different ideologies and personalities of their own.
Over the course of time the project has naturally evolved into to what it has become today, my initial idea for this project was to instigate the closure of free healthcare around the Somerset area, this issue became quite personal to me as I was aware of the issues facing a majority of the people. I gathered secondary source by getting into contact with journalists which covered the news of the closure and the organisations that have instigated protests for the subject. However, I was unable to carry out this idea which created a new path for me to focus my time on the current subject. This subject was titled 'How does it feel to be a young person in 2018?' Moving forward with this concept allowed me to observe and acknowledge my surroundings as a student and the availability of others my age. Being present in an intuitional environment allowed me access to student whom varied in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and social class. A series of interviews were recorded within the classroom and the subjects touched on issue ranging from mental illness, gender inequality, feminism, privilege, the educational system, race and politics.
The interpretation evolved along with the project itself as I became more intuitive to my environments and examined ways in which I could explore the brief without stating the obvious. This directed me to think of ways in which I could fully engage the viewer in my work and this was achieved through assimilating them with the inclusion of archived footage and audio.
My final piece included both juxtapositions and coherence between the visual and audio format, it was important for me to juxtapose the audio with the visuals as it extends the expectation for the viewer and thus showing a greater exploration of the brief. The harmony between the two formats became just as importance during the discourse of race and gender, these issues were visually represented through archived footage of the civil rights movement in the 60s as well as clips from films which related to issues of sexualisation of women in the media as well as our society.
As an overall, this project reflects the opinions and mindsets of the youth today and what it feels like to been a young person in 2018. I wanted the document to have a social political relevance as this area interests me and has creatively satisfied me. The piece of work produced instigates young people to take part in more conversations like these and I believe as a person being form that demographic its crucial for us to hear each other's voices and support each other's ideologies when relevant and urgent.
